Cross-border shopping to benefit from seasonal Ecommerce spike according to PayPal




The holiday shopping season is in full swing, bringing with it an ecommerce frenzy. The spike in online purchases during this time of the year also offers a unique opportunity for Filipino retailers: cross border shopping.

“There is a definitely a real opportunity for Filipino entrepreneurs to connect with global consumers. Chinese consumers are particularly promising, given the Philippines' improved bilateral relations with the world’s second largest economy,” said Nagesh Devata, General Manager for Cross Border Trade, Asia Pacific, PayPal.

According to PayPal’s Cross-Border Consumer Research in 2018, there is a healthy appetite for ecommerce in the Asia Pacific region, with 48 percent of consumers shopping cross-border.[1]Last year, PayPal reported a record-breaking USD 1 billion+ in mobile payment volume for the first time ever on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.[2]

For many traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, embracing an omni-channel strategy that includes ecommerce has paved the way for more sales opportunities, especially during this time of year.

“The festive season, stretching from the end of November with Black Friday through to February with Chinese New Year, typically marks a critical time for small retailers to maximize their business opportunities and boost sales,” said Devata. “For some, these months can generate the profits needed to cover operations for the year.”

The world has become much smaller as digital commerce platforms like PayPal enable merchants and consumers from all over the world do business with one other, to take advantage of opportunities by connecting them with global consumers, allowing SMEs and micro enterprises more opportunities to thrive.

With many holiday purchases now being done online and global consumers opting to shop cross-border, PayPal shares three tips on how retailers can prepare their businesses for seasonal success:

1.      Plan for mobile– Mobile devices have become the preferred platform for shopping due to their convenience. While majority of cross-border purchases in 2018 were still made via desktop, laptop or notebook, the percentage of purchases on mobile is growing. In fact, 32 percent of all cross-border purchases in Asia Pacific was done on mobile.[3]

2.      Check your website security– Research by HubSpot has found that 82 percent of online users avoid sites flagged as ‘not secure’ by their browser. This makes it essential for businesses to strengthen their website security and ensure that their ecommerce pages are compliant with the local laws of their target markets.[4]

3.      Offer more payment optionsAccording to PayPal, many consumers will cancel transactions if their preferred or trusted form of payment is unavailable. The 2018 cross-border study shows that two-thirds of online shoppers will only use a payment option or brand they recognize when making a purchase.[5]

By knowing how to effectively use online and digital channels to sell, small retailers and SMEs can make the most out of the festive season and stay ahead of the competition.

BCB Blockchain Powers Payment Infrastructure Of Metro Manila’s Biggest Spa


Metro Manila’s biggest spa is now starting to accept crypto currency as mode of payment.

Data science and consumer awareness used to safeguard digital transactions




The digitization of money, widespread access to the Internet, and mass-adoption of smartphones are positive headwinds in the Philippines' journey towards a digital economy. While the potential is undeniable, there is also concern that cyberattackers are shifting their focus to Asia-Pacific.[1]

Cybercriminals are growing in sophistication, and they are constantly finding new ways to victimize consumers and breach enterprises. This calls for a re-evaluation of safeguards against cyber threats.
“For consumers, there is really no subsitute to awareness,” said Nagesh Devata, General Manager of Southeast Asia Cross Border Markets for PayPal. “For enterprises, we need to move from reactive to predictive models in risk management.”

PayPal, the global leader in digital payments, outlined five consumer tips to secure online payments: (1) protect your personal information; (2) choose a strong password that combines alphanumeric characters; (3) share personal information only through authentic online banking features (4); opt for a 2-factor authentication, where a user is granted access only after successfully presenting two or more pieces of evidence to an authentication mechanism; and (5) ensure that authentic apps are downloaded for payment. 
According to PayPal consumer research, 43 percent of consumers in Asia-Pacific identify security as the primary motivation when choosing a payment method while 38 percent choose convenience.[2]
With over 286 million active accounts made up of consumers and merchants. PayPal has a foothold on both equations of the purchasing process. “This puts us in a unique position to find insights [for consumers and merchants] in the entire process. Cybersecurity is a team sport, and everyone has a part to play.” described Devata.

Using data to mitigate risk
PayPal anchors its risk management on data science as it bridges technology and business. Through its two sidednetwork, it is able to study both sides of the transaction while providing buyer protection, data encryption, and a seamless experience for its customers.

For PayPal, data not only enables better customer experiences, but also enables it to take on more risk. “At the heart of everything we do with data, we do for our customers and to help our customers connect better,” said Devata. 

“There is a strong network effect in the digital payments business. And we want to enable the good guys while keeping the bad guys out. This allows us to provide security and value to both merchants and consumers,” added Devata.

Story-based analytics for risk assessment
Matching users poses a series of analytical and technical challenges, PayPal uses advanced machine learning combined with proprietary story-based analytics to drive better risk decisions. “We run multiple models and rules before making decisions on transactions—all within milliseconds,” Devata added.

PayPal leverages the network effect for risk management by evaluating all the accountsit recognizes for its customers when making real-time assessments. According to Devata, the task is to identify accounts with suspicious fraudulent behaviors, and that requires a lot of science and analytics.

“There is a human story behind every transaction, and we combine data analytics and human oversight to find this story and try to protect our customers,” said Devata.

Future looks brighter with BDO earning P20.2 Billion in first 6 months of 2019



BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) sustained its momentum as it delivered P20.2 billion in earnings for the first six months of the year on strong recurring earnings from its core businesses, solid growth in fee income and normalization of trading & forex gains.

Net interest income increased by 24% to P56.9 billion as net interest margins (NIMs) improved to 3.99 per cent from 3.50 per cent last year. Gross customer loans grew by seven (7) per cent to P2.0 trillion, as the Bank continued to generate double-digit growth in the consumer and middle market segments. Meanwhile, total deposits went up by three (3) per cent to P2.4 trillion, reflective of customers’ shift to higher-yielding fixed income investments, primarily bank-issued bonds. The Bank’s CASA ratio, however, was maintained at 70 per cent.

Non-interest income was up 29 per cent to P29.5 billion as fee-based income and insurance premiums posted double-digit growth. Further, trading and forex gains normalized to P3.6 billion on favorable capital market conditions.

Operating expenses grew by 21 per cent in line with the Bank’s continuing expansion, with 53 domestic branches and offices opened in the 1H 2019, as well as higher volume-related expenses. Taxes and licenses and policy reserves at BDO Life increased by 51 per cent. Excluding volume-related expenses, opex growth would have risen by 14 per cent in line with the Bank’s investment in branches and business development offices nationwide.

Provisions amounted to P3.0 billion as the Bank maintained its conservative credit and provisioning policies. Gross non-performing loan (NPL) ratio was steady at 1.2 per cent while NPL cover remained high at 163.2 per cent.

Total capital grew to P350.8 billion, with Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Common Equity Tier 1 Ratio at 14.2 per cent and 12.6 per cent, respectively, higher quarter-on-quarter and remaining comfortably above regulatory requirements.

With expectations of better economic prospects going forward, BDO will continue to build on its business franchise and extensive distribution network to tap new growth areas and underserved markets.
